SpartanSaving.com was established on August the 18th 2007, with the goal of helping the average family save money at home. Every tip on this website has a monetary value (in American dollars) that will help you understand how much money you could save by following any of these tips.
* Don't leave lights on when not in use, if you do then use a dimmer. Some CFL's now can be bought that have dimming settings on them. Do not use dimmers on regular CFL's.
* Switch to CFL's. A regular 100watt incandescent light bulb has a life of 700 hours, while a 27watt CFL (which emits the same amount of light as a 100watt incandescent) has a life of 10 000 hours. If you switch 4 60W incandescents with 4 13W CFL's you can save 35.8$/Yr.
*When brushing your teeth do not leave the water running for the whole time your brushing. Same goes with shaving. 6$/Yr.
* Let your hair air-dry instead of using a hairdryer. You could save 4.26$/Yr.
* Fix any leaky faucets. Stopping a faucet dripping at a drop a second will save you 5.40$/Yr.
*Buy your toilet paper in bulk, you know you going to have to use it. Also don't buy the brand name toilet paper brands Charmin and the kitty brand, many supermarkets offer the same amount of smoothness and texture for about 2/3rds the price. You could save 20$/Yr.
*Purchase a lower flush toilet, you do not need to use the large flush on every little action you do in the toilet. Consider purchasing a toilet with 2 different flush settings, one for a #1 and one for a #2. You can save 7.05$/Yr.
*Install a low flow showerhead. Regular showerheads allow up to 10 gallons a minute, a low-flow will reduce it to only 2 gallons a minute. Having a 10 minute shower everyday of the year with a low-flow will instead of a regular flow will save you 58.40$/YR. If you shower for 5 minutes instead of 10 with a low flow you'll save 65.70$/YR.
*Take showers instead of baths, this can save over 100$'s a year. Also take 5-minute showers instead of 20-minute showers. In reality you do not need all that water just to wash yourself down. You could save 100$/Yr.
*Buy your soap in large bundles. Another thing you know you'll have to end up using, buy in the largest packs possible. This could save you 20$/Yr.
*Your towels do not have to be washed every second day. Air-dry and clean them after a weeks use, or until they really start to smell. This can save you 5$/Yr.
*Use a safety razor and not a disposable one. It's much cheaper in the long run. Also don't buy a brand new 6 razor blade. Do you really need all the power from 5 razors at the front and one at the back? Don't forget the days when people still used single blade razors, many still do. A 3 month pack of Gillette's new Phantom razor plus pro (or whatever it's called) is around 50$. Using safety razors can save you 60$/Yr.
*Cut down on your use of shampoo and conditioner. Rethink the average amount of shampoo you usually use, don't repeat. Repeat is just another gimmick to get you to use more shampoo/conditioner. This can save you 20$/Yr.
*"If it's yellow let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." Good way to save money on water. Save yourself 2$/Yr.
Total Savings : 346.51$/Yr.
